Mandates
The concepts making responsibility explicit: mandates, commitments, consent, and authorisation.
- care mandate
  mandate based on a commitment and either an informed consent or an authorization by law defining the rights and obligations of one care actor with regard to their involvement in care processes performed for a specific subject of care
- care commitment
  acceptance of a request for care including commitment by the care actor to perform requested care activities
- informed consent
  permission to perform care activities, voluntarily given by a subject of care with consent competence or by a subject of care proxy with consent competence after having been informed about the purpose and the possible results of the care activities
- objection
  subject of care desire that specific care activities are not performed
- consent competence
  capability of the subject of care or the subject of care proxy, or both, to give or withhold informed consent
- authorization by law
  provision in legislation that, in certain circumstances, may overrule the need for informed consent
- subject of care desire
  desire expressed by the subject of care or the subject of care proxy regarding the performance of certain care activities
- care activity mandate

Example 1 A subject of care requesting care from a general practitioner.

Example 2 Care for a child requested by a parent.

Example 3 A passer-by may, in some jurisdictions, be obliged to seek care for any endangered person, for example unconscious after a road accident.

Note 1 A request for care is usually made by a subject of care themselves, but there are circumstances where the subject of care is not in the position of making a request for care. In that case, it may be made on their behalf by another person, such as decision-making representative with power of attorney.

Note 2 Within certain jurisdictions a generic request mandate may be explicitly or implicitly assigned to certain categories of citizens on the basis of their specific roles. It may also be directly or indirectly made necessary by law that such generic mandates are explicitly established.

Note 3 Every care professional with authority (mandate to manage health matters of a subject of care) is entitled to request services and has a request mandate.
